A Night at the Art Auction

Children's art on display at the Art Auction
ELC Art Auction at the RCMP Heritage Centre

November 20, 2008 – The RCMP Heritage Centre was an elegant venue for the art auction Room to Grow held on November 20th and sponsored by SaskEnergy. The event was hosted by Bill Stovin from the ELC's Capital Campaign Management Committee.

Guests mingled and chatted, nibbling on food provided by sponsors Karal Management and Nicky's Cafe and admiring the beautiful pieces of art donated by local artists. Two pieces portraying jars of pickled peppers and gherkins by acclaimed artist Victor Cicansky evoked a Christmas spirit with their bright green and red.

A display of art made by the children of the Early Learning Centre garnered a great deal of interest. People were amazed at the high quality of the art. Some of the pieces were included in the auction. A great favourite was a child's painting of a cow, a realistic interpretation with a touch of impressionism! The purpose of the display was to celebrate children on National Child Day and showcase the work of the Early Learning Centre.

Four items were reserved for live auction. One of the organizing committee acted as auctioneer and encouraged lively participation from the guests who responded good-naturedly, even when a husband and wife discovered they were bidding against each other!

Lots of networking took place with two artists volunteering to come to the Centre to make art with the children after the new studio is completed. In all, $10,500 was raised for the building of the new studio, The Lantern. Even more importantly, community connections were strengthened and the Early Learning Centre's work affirmed.

It was a great evening. Bill thanked the volunteer committee who organized it: Laurie, Shannon, Carla, Lana and Patty, supported by ELC staff.
