| What
do three to five-year old children and renowned artist Joe Fafard have in
common? |

|
Both use art as a means of communication; both help us see the world through new eyes; both use their imaginations to capture and share unique glimpses of reality. Art is a critical component of a good early childhood program and here at the ELC we believe in promoting the children's capabilities by providing the space, time, materials and guidance that children need to observe natural phenomena and learn techniques of self expression. To further the learning goals for the children, the ELC is building an addition to the preschool as part of the capital project. Architect Bob Ellard, whose team designed the new structure, dubbed it The Lantern. The new space will enable children to engage in long-term art and science projects. It will also provide space for therapeutic art programming for parents. On June 19th, with the help of Joe Fafard, architect Bob Ellard, Executive Director Mary Ann McGrath and the children, a ceremonial sod turning ceremony was held at the Athol St site. Parents, children and supporters gathered for the event. Joe Fafard stressed the importance of art as a language and its role in helping children express their developing perceptions about the world. He acknowledged the ELC for recognizing the importance of fostering art in young children. Work on the addition is scheduled to begin this
summer.
