June 5 – Over 300 people joined staff and students for a special day at the Early Learning Centre for the celebration of the ELC's 30th anniversary. The staff was busy all day with preparations.

The event kicked off with a BBQ picnic held in the Spiral Garden in front of the school. Parents, staff and other guests chatted and mingled, sharing photos, stories and memories, while the children played and enjoyed popcorn, candy floss and art activities. The short program began with a welcome speech from Executive Director Mary Ann McGrath, who spoke briefly about the history of ELC. Elder Norma Jean Byrd offered a prayer for all present and for all the people who are no longer with us.

A piece of framed children’s art was presented to ELC founder Anne Luke in recognition of her work with the Centre over the past 30 years. Grandmother Bernadine Maxie also presented a dance shield and ribbon shirt to Anne on behalf of the Maxie family, which has been involved with the ELC for a number of years. Ten of Bernadine’s children and several of her grandchildren have attended the ELC. “My family wants to give something back to the Centre for all it’s done for us" said Bernadine.

Connie Starblanket, FSIN 2008 Princess and a former ELC student spoke of the strong influence the ELC has had on her life, and demonstrated her dancing.

The Red Dog drum group with Kelsey Starblanket as MC gave a few demonstration songs. They ended with a final round dance in which young and old took part. Grandmother and former staff person at the ELC, Mary LaPlante, introduced her grandchildren who demonstrated some Metis jigging. The children danced hard and brought many smiles to all.
